On GMA today they were talking about teens that cut themselves. I've known about this phenomenon, but the piece talked about a new component, which is "documenting" themselves cutting, hitting, hurting themselves in some way & posting it on youtube for other "cutters" to see. In fact they said that 14-24% of teens have a problem with cutting & these videos have over 2 million hits!!
I started talking to John about this...here is a little bit of how our conversation went.
me: "wow...I mean...should we even have kids in this crazy world!?!?"
John: .....
me: "I mean they need Jesus right!? This kid just said that the only time they feel release is when they cause themselves pain!? There just has to be some spiritual aspect to this don't you think!?"
John:.....
me: "to actually feel a sense of release by injuring themselves..it's so destructive!"
John:....
me: "How do you parent!? How can we be parents!? What would we do if that was our kid!?"
John:....
me: "maybe I'm totally wrong and naive about this subject...but surely these kids that cut have a rough home life, wouldn't you think!? People just don't know how to be parents & they shouldn't if they can't be a parent! Some people just don't grow up and are so self centered they can't raise their kids! That has to be what his happening here, right? Don't you think!?"
John:...uh....
me: "You should hear some of the stories that K has told me about these kids home lives...maybe when we are parents we can help those kids...they can come play at our house after school."
John...eyebrows raised...
me: "Well I will tell you right now that if I had a teen upstairs I would talk about this with them! I would just ask them what they know about cutting. Who of their friends cut & why do they think people do this!? I'll tell you right now that is what I would do...confront this issue straight on."
John: "yeah...I know you would because I just got talked to about it for 10 minutes!"
I bet he can't wait to have kids with me :)

You made me laugh, Lisa. I could actually hear you saying this. And for what it's worth, I think you will be a great parent.
I love this because I did the same thing last night to Adam after watching "My Sister's Keeper". But my conversation's theme was "What if we have a child that develops cancer"? "What if that kid wants to do things you know are wrong just because he/she doesn't have that much time to live??" Then it turns to me just asking why those things haven't happened to me and why am I so blessed to escape it? I was crying before I knew it! I knew there was a reason we were friends:-)
