I went to the doc. last week for a sore throat. I figured it was a sinus infection, but wanted to make sure it wasn't strep or something contagious. The truth of the matter is my body was exhausted from a work trip to New Orleans where I'm on my feet all day and I don't stop talking! (post about this trip is in process) so my immune system was down and very susceptible.
I go to the family medicine clinic down the street and wait for over an hour. I'm already mad at myself for going to the doctor so soon. I normally don't drag myself there until I'm on my death bed, but I wanted to do it different this time...get ahead of it before it got really bad.
I explain to the doctor my symptoms and he asks if I have had a cough. "nope, no coughing at all." "Good" he says and sends me to the lab for a strep test. While waiting in the lab I talk to 85 year old Peggy about her fairly new husband, horrible hip replacements & physical therapy and her daughter-in-law who is from the Philippines & met her son over the internet....they have a 3 year old.
The doc. comes back to tell me step is negative. He says "so just fill that prescription I gave you & that should help." I explain, "you never gave me a prescription..." so he starts to fill out the pad. "now, some people have a problem with the codeine that's in this cough syrup....."
"oh...is the cough syrup going to help with the congestion...because I'm not coughing." "oh...I thought you were...hum...ok..here is some Allegra."
He also told me everyone in town had "it" which is funny since it was my first day back in town and that it would take me 2 weeks to feel better. He never really identified what "it" was.
In case you are under the weather & thinking about going to the doctor, let my experience be a reminder to wait until your death bed before seeing anyone....
happy coughing! :)
